PPWR: From Supplier PDFs to the Digital Packaging Record

Since August 12, every piece of packaging newly placed on the EU market needs an EU declaration of conformity and the evidence behind it. We show how that becomes a digital record you can version and update, instead of falling apart into a hundred PDFs..

What it's about

The PPWR has applied since August 12, 2026, and its substantive requirements take effect in stages. For brand owners, this means: if you sell a packaged product under your own name or trademark, you are usually the manufacturer of the packaging, even if an external packaging maker physically produces it. Conformity assessment, technical documentation and the EU declaration of conformity therefore sit with you, not with your packaging supplier. In typical distribution, you also take on the role of EPR producer: registration, volume reporting and financing in each member state.

Much of the data for this isn't created by you, but by your packaging maker and their upstream suppliers. It arrives as a test report, a weighing log, a spreadsheet attached to an email. Technically correct, operationally hard to use, as long as nobody can say which packaging version a document belongs to, which products use that version and whether the evidence is still valid.

That's where the webinar comes in. Hendrik Bauer, our COO, who as Senior Director of Purchasing at ALDI Nord was once responsible for the packaging of private-label products himself, explains what really sits with you and from when. Deborah Walsleben from our Product Solutions team then shows on a real packaging record how scattered supplier information becomes an approved, versioned data set with a declaration of conformity.

End

Afterward, the speakers will be available to answer individual questions.

Take that with you

After 45 minutes, you'll know how to tackle the PPWR

Your role and what follows from it

Manufacturers, EPR producer, or both: which obligations apply to which role, what that means for you in practice, and what scenarios can change the assignment—such as imports, private labels, or cross-border B2B transactions.

What's Already in Effect and What's Coming Up

Articles 15 and 16 effective August 12, 2026; material labeling starting in 2028; recyclability and minimization starting in 2030. And what documentation you can now request from your packaging manufacturer.

What EPR Means in Practice

Registration, volume reporting, and financing by member state; who plays what role in cross-border B2B transactions; and how recyclability and the proportion of recycled content will influence contributions in the future.

What this looks like on the platform

A 10-minute live demo using a real packaging file: how components, supporting documentation, and the declaration of conformity all come together, and what happens when a supplier changes the material or weight and all affected products must be updated accordingly.

Before Hendrik Bauer joined Narravero as COO, he was a senior director of purchasing at ALDI Nord, where he was once responsible for the packaging of private-label products. himself. He is therefore very familiar with the requirements facing industry and retail. He knows the requirements facing industry and retail firsthand, having held that responsibility himself. At Narravero, he oversees implementation from regulatory requirements through to day-to-day operations and determines which PPWR obligations require immediate action and which are still pending further legislation.

For whom

Relevant for brands that package their products—and for the roles that make it happen.

Fashion & Textiles

Shoe boxes, tissue paper, plastic bags, shipping boxes. Many options, many suppliers, but the same documentation requirements for each type of packaging.

Electronics

Outer packaging, molded parts, films. And a product that is itself assigned a DPP: Section 12(5) then requires a single, common data carrier.

Furniture & Home Decor

Large-format cardboard boxes, edge protection, multi-component packaging. The minimization requirement under Article 10 applies here first and most clearly.

Compliance & Regulatory Affairs

Which requirements apply and when, what must be included in the technical documentation, and what the EU Declaration of Conformity covers for each type of packaging.

Product & IT

Data model, packaging ID, versioning, change control, and integration with existing PIM, ERP, and supplier processes.

Management

Responsibility, EPR costs, and the question of whether this is a project with an end date or an ongoing obligation involving continuous expenses.

What You Need to Know Before Registering

I can't be there in person.

No problem—you'll receive the recording via email afterward.

Is there a fee to participate?

No, participation is free.

How technical will it be?

It is intended for specialists and managers; no prior knowledge of data models is required. We will work through a single, continuous example so that the role and data logic remains clear even without the text of the regulation.

Is there a product demo?

Yes, 10 of the 45 minutes. Deborah Walsleben will set up a packaging file in the Narravero platform so you can see how components, supporting documentation, and the declaration of conformity actually come together. You don’t need to prepare anything for this. If you’d like to see how this applies to your own packaging, we’ll schedule a separate appointment for that afterward.

My industry isn't listed here. Is the webinar still relevant?

Yes. The PPWR applies to all packaging placed on the EU market, meaning it extends far beyond the industries mentioned. We use fashion, electronics, and furniture as examples because they clearly illustrate typical scenarios: many variants, multiple suppliers, and multi-component packaging. The roles and data logic are the same, whether you’re packaging shoes, tools, or cosmetics.

I only have my packaging manufactured. Am I still affected?

Yes, that is precisely the main scenario. Article 3(1)(13)(a) refers to the company that has the packaging or the packaged product developed or manufactured under its own name or brand. The Commission Guidelines (C/2026/3084) confirm that only one manufacturer in the supply chain; for sales and outer packaging, this is generally the filler or brand owner. Certain situations may change this, such as micro-enterprises, neutral standard packaging, or specific import and distribution channels. We’ll go over these in the webinar.

Do I need a digital product passport for my packaging?

The PPWR does not mandate a general packaging DPP. However, it requires that you have control over data, supporting documentation, versions, and product assignments. As soon as a data carrier requirement applies to your packaged product under other EU law, Article 12(5) requires a single, common data carrier for the necessary product and packaging information. This is precisely where the question of data structure becomes concrete.

Does this also apply to reusable packaging?

No. This webinar covers single-use sales and outer packaging in the branded and private-label sectors. According to Article 12(2), the labeling and information requirements for reusable packaging will not take effect until February 12, 2029, or 30 months after the relevant implementing act enters into force, whichever is later. This implementing act has not yet been adopted: The Commission has allowed its own deadline of August 12, 2026, to pass. Until its content is known, we will not make any statements regarding the scope and implementation of this requirement.

Can I submit my own questions?

Yes. From 10:47 a.m., we’ve set aside 13 minutes for the live Q&A, and you can ask questions via chat at any time during the session.
